All You Need to Know About Metal Detector
Metal Detector is a device that detects metal substance even if its buried under the surface . Metal detectors are useful for finding buried treasures hidden underground , They often consist of a handheld unit with a sensor probe which can be swept over the ground or other objects.
How Metal Detector Work?
The simplest way metal detector works is when the Metal Detector sensor comes near a piece of any metal this is indicated by a changing tone in earphones, or a needle moving on an indicator. Usually the device gives some indication of distance and the type of the metal , the higher the tone in the earphone or the higher the needle goes.
What are the Types of Metals Detectors ?
We can classify metal detectors to four main types , and each varies in what it is able to find .
It’s important to choose a metal detector that fits your needs , because you wouldn’t want to buy the wrong one that can’t detect the type of material you’re looking for.
Types Of Metal Detector:
1 – Very Low Frequency (VLF)
This type of metal detector is very widely used because of its technological advancements. Unlike other metal detectors that only have one coil, the VLF has 2 spherical wire coils where each serves as a transmitter and a receiver.
The transmitter sends out the magnetic field while the receiver receives the magnetic field from a metal.
The beauty of this type of metal detector is that it extends to underground, and it sends a different frequency for different types of metals.
If you plan on looking for gold and silver, then this is the most recommended metal detector to buy.
2- Pulse Induction (PI)
The pulse induction metal detector is commonly used by security people to detect concealed weapons.
If saw a security checkpoint on the road and you see guards walking around your car with a metal detector, then they’re probably using the pulse induction type.
Unlike VLF which has two coils working differently, PI has one or a set of coils that work as one. It uses echolocation wherein the reaction made by the metal responds as a form of “pulse”.
3- Beat-Frequency Oscillation
And then you have beat-frequency oscillation. It has a twisted copper coil roller all over a ring made from steel.
There are two rings in a beat-frequency oscillation detector – a large one and a small one. Both have different frequencies, and the way for you to know if there’s metal underneath is it produces a noticeable sound.
4- Industrial
Stick metal detectors are not the only kind of metal detectors out there. there are also door frame detectors that use the same concept whenever a person passes through it.
Door frame detectors are best for detecting criminals who might bring dangerous weapons inside public establishments. In airports, it often comes with a conveyor belt that scans the contents of your bag.
What Type Of Metal That Metal Detectors Finds ?
Metal detector will be able to alert the operator to both ferrous and non ferrous metals , General-purpose metal detectors can find buried metal objects such as jewelry, coins and other metal objects. “Discrimination” is a process that distinguishes between different metal targets or alloys.
Metal detectors detect:
- Gold
- Silver
- Brass
- Bronze
- Copper
- Aluminum
- Iron
- Lead
- Nickel
- Tin
- Zinc
